Other Hobbies Besides Reading?

What do you do in your free time when you’re not reading? Do you hop onto social media? Do you immerse yourself in world news? Do you watch Netflix?

If you’re on my blog, you probably read as a hobby. My question for you though is: What else do you do in your free time?

Video Gaming

I have two main hobbies – reading and gaming. I also love watching a few TV shows and spending time on YouTube, but I don’t dedicate enough time to doing those two to consider them significant hobbies. Other than reading, something else that I consider a significant hobby is video gaming.

I’ve been big on both reading and gaming since I was a kid. As I’ve mentioned a few times on my blog, I’ve been reading ever since I became literate. I also started playing Pokemon on my Gameboy ever since my parents finally gave in and bought it for me when I was in first grade. My love of reading developed into this book blog. My love of gaming developed into playing more games. In present day, World of Warcaft is a video game that I really enjoy. There’s just so many aspects to the game, and I love it. The Warcraft movie is coming out tomorrow – you bet I already booked my movie tickets a couple of weeks ago.

I love both reading and gaming, but for different reasons. Because of that, the time that I spend reading and the time that I spend gaming tend to have an inverse correlation. I usually get really into either reading or gaming for a period of time, seldom both.

My Time Management

Recently, I’ve been really getting into Overwatch. If you don’t know what it is, it’s basically just a new video game that a lot of people have been hyped about for a while. I’ve played it a bit recently, and I think it’s amazing. I know that I’m about to enter a period of time where I binge video gaming, specifically Overwatch. However, I don’t want to be reading significantly less or posting less frequently on my blog. I’m therefore going to do my best to get in some reading every day, as well as allocate some time to dedicate to my blog. So don’t fret! 🙂

I want to emphasize that even though I do have other hobbies, I won’t be slacking on my blog posts. Although I’ve been gaming more as of late, it hasn’t taken up a lot of time. I’ve been recently traveling and going out with friends a lot, so that’s what’s been causing my delay in responding to comments and being slow with reading. As I’m writing this blog post, I’m at a Bed and Breakfast where I’m staying the night while on a road trip. In addition to constantly being out and about lately, it’s been hard for me to read too much in one sitting because the two books I’m currently reading are horror. It’s a hard genre for me to read too much of since I’m prone to getting scared easily, but I’m trudging my way through it.

All of that being said, things will settle down for me soon once I start my job, so I’ll be back in my blogging and reading groove in a bit over a week! I won’t let the horror portions of the books I’m currently reading stop me from devouring them once my time becomes more manageable. 😛

I do theater when I can! I grew up dancing and doing chorus, so whenever there’s a good show at the community theater, I audition or at least go see it. I love listening to music (lots of genres) and watching Netflix as well!

Hi Jorelene! You are so advanced 🙂 my version of ‘gaming’ are time-management and hidden-object games, which I know probably don’t even fall in the category of ‘gaming’.
My favorite thing to do outside of reading is dancing – I take several classes a week, mostly ballet and modern dance.

Gaming is something I’ve always been interested in, but haven’t really fully gotten into. I recently finished and loved Life is Strange and I miss it so much. I was also obsessed with watching Until Dawn Let’s Plays on YouTube because I don’t have a PS4 😅 I’m currently trying to make my way through Undertale, but I’m stuck on one level and it’s so frustrating ahaha. I went through a stage where all I would do was play the Sims – I haven’t played it in so long but I have like 4GB of Custom Content and Mods on my laptop still.

I listen to music every day, but I’m not sure if that’s a hobby haha. I also do graphic and web design when I’m feeling inspired. I suppose my main hobby though is my Paranormal Investigating. I help run little tours around town every second weekend and it’s so much fun.

My brothers are both super into gaming, and while I enjoy it, I am the absolute worst at it!
My other hobbies would definitely be going on YouTube, watching TV shows and listening to (and playing) music. 🙂

I love to watch historical documentaries. The treasure is the Mayan King kind. I get into the search for any clues and the bits and pieces that they run across in their investigation. It is like history crack lol. I also like to watch alternative music videos 😊

Ohh I absolutely love this topic, it’s great to talk about other hobbies besides reading 🙂 I think my biggest hobby besides reading is travelling, and everything going with it, such as planning, budgeting, writing down lists and checking maps and everything. I do that way too much, and I love it! 🙂
I hope you’re having a great time on your road trip! 🙂

Besides reading, and binge-watching tv shows, I absolutely love watching gameplays on YouTube! I suck at gaming myself (I’m just not coordinated enough to to aim and shoot and look out for other people attacking me…), but I love watching other people game! I just finished watching Uncharted 4 gameplays 😊

Whooo! A fellow WoW player who’s also into books! I haven’t been playing for 1.5 years or so, but damn rights I’ll be buying the new expansion on the 30th of August :3. I won’t be able to play Overwatch because FPS’s make me nauseous and shaky, but I do play Hearthstone and Heroes of the Storm occasionally :3. So yes, gaming is also my other hobby besides reading. I’m heavily into board/card games as well. So much I’m working on setting up a site dedicated to it :).

I am a TV show addict. Right now, I am binge-watching Gilmore Girls. Because of health issues, I haven’t been able to read or write posts as much as I’m used to. The only hobby that works when I’m down is watching TV. It doesn’t require my brain to work to its maximum capacity! Also, I practice Yoga on a daily basis. I lost my yoga teacher, so it’s only a morning private practice, but it takes a little time. I should get better at time managing because I’m having trouble juggling with everything. It seems I never have enough time to read, blog, read posts, and deal with every day chores.

Balance! It’s so tricky, isn’t it? My saving grace is my dog, Hugo. He gets me off the computer — whether I’m there blogging or hammering away at a novel– & out into the fresh air (or rainy…or snowy… or whatever the day brings!). I love detaching from the screen & getting out into nature. Sometimes I think about a story I’m working on. Sometimes I just check out the world around me & try to find something new & wonderful (it’s not hard if I’ve got my eyes open!). Sometimes I pray as we walk, & other times I do nothing but put one foot in front of the other. Getting outside offers a chance to take some deep breaths, change perspective, & get your blood moving so when you come back to the work you left behind, you’re alive & rearing to go!

I highly recommend it– go for a nature walk! Ideally with a dog;-)

(I swear I commented on this post so if you get two comments from me apologies!)

I love the concept of gaming, but I’m not fully into it haha. I did finish Life is Strange and I loved it so so so much. I watched a bunch of Let’s Plays on Until Dawn because I don’t have a PS4. I’m currently trying to get through Undertale but that’s on hold because I’m stuck on a level and it’s making me so angry 😂 I also go through on and off obsessions with The Sims.

Is listening to music a hobby? Because that’d be mine, haha! Otherwise it’d be web and graphic design. As well as my Paranormal Investigations where I help run tours around town 😊

This was a fun idea for a blog post to get your readers involved! I hope you’re enjoying your travels. It’s important to live a bit and get out, not always be in front of a screen. In addition to reading, hobbies I regularly engage in are walking or hiking with my dogs (twice a day, every day before and after work), running (three to five times a week), writing (just had a piece published this week, and three that will run over the summer :-), and gardening (we have a greenhouse and garden where we grow all kinds of fruits and vegetables).

  13. amortalreader1

I don’t really have many other hobbies, between university and work I never really have much spare time. Also throw in having my niece and nephew running me ragged on my days off then reading is usually my only escape. During summer my working hours pick up the hours I am not at university too, so my hobbies don’t really change much. I try to see my friends, but I like to relax and watch Youtube, films and movies when I’m not really reading.

    🙂

  14. Kourtni @ Kourtni Reads

I play video games too if you count The Sims hahahaha That has been a huge obsession of mine since I was in elementary school (I used to always play my older brother’s game and mess it up – I even got his family’s kids taken away once lol) and I’ve never grown out of it. Other than that, I watch a lot of Netflix and waste a lot of time on Tumblr. I’m trying to make exercise a hobby of mine, but that’s not working out so well haha
I have the same problem as you though – I go through periods of either reading a lot or playing The Sims a lot or watching a lot of Netflix. I can’t seem to balance them.

  15. Mystery Date with a Book

I like gaming too! Especially The Sims! 😀 I’ve also started a bullet journal this week, so I’ve been spending a lot of time on decorating and coming up with new things to write on it… It’s surprisingly relaxing!

  16. Fatima @ NoteablePad

Ooh, I hope you’re enjoying your travels and having a good time! I have a lot of hobbies, but like you, I have periods when I mostly stick to one thing. Mostly I watch funny Youtube videos, films, anime, Kdramas, TV shows – that’s when I’m not writing and researching 🙂 and reading. I’m really bad with time management, though. I think when I started book blogging, this became more important and I’m now working on it.

  17. ringaroundtheprose

Hi! Other than reading I’m big on gaming and traveling. I’m making my way through Witcher 3, and just finished planning a trip to Southeast Asia next month. For both reading and gaming I need to be in the right mood; while I’m okay with reading in small bursts (1-2 chapters at a time), I need at least a solid two hours to feel like I made progress in a game.

  18. Beth (Reading Every Night)

This is such a great idea for a post, and it’s nice to talk about life outside of reading and blogging as well (though those are the two of my hobbies which take up the most time)
I bake in my spare time, what little I have of it, and can I say travelling as well? I have an aim to go and see as many countries and sights as I possibly can, I want to go everywhere and do everything!
I hope you’re having a great time on your road trip. I’m sure it’s an amazing experience! 😀

  19. Yodamom

I kayak, ocean and lake when the weather is good. If I go alone I listen to audiobooks while paddling, a two for hobby. I don’t like to sit and watch TV and I work online so when I’m free I get outdoors

  20. Elle R. Williams

Yes, reading is one of my main hobbies and I am happy to say that I am doing it more often this year. Besides reading I do have several of my favorite TV shows and movies I watch all the time. I am trying to watch less, but I cannot resist some of those great shows like Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, Turn, and Reign. The other thing I’m trying to do more is being active. I like to ride my bike, run, and walk around town. I’m planning on taking a trip to some local caves, playing tennis and pickle ball. Unfortunately I’ve been having ankle pain in the last few months and now I’m told to rest it by my doctor.

  21. lynndellwatson

I garden and spend time with my family (we have three young adult children with spouses and soon to have our first grandbaby!) I paint crafts/decorations (wooden and ceramic); I learned how to crochet last summer, so I have made couples blankets for my married children. I enjoy growing house plants, taking care of our cat, four fish and aquatic frog. My husband and I watch Netflix together and vacation to Disneyland as often as we can.

  22. Ashleigh

I feel like I have quite a few hobbies because I’m literally never bored. Reading is my main one, but I usually read for a few hours in the evenings. Then there’s blogging, which happens in the mornings, unless I’m busy that day, then it’ll be written and scheduled the night before. I adore singing, but that can be done whenever, even when multitasking. And I like art, which is the most time consuming. If I’m in a creative mood, I usually end up spending an entire day making things. And of course, I hop around on social media, but that’s just a few minutes every so often through the day 😀

  23. Lois

When I was younger I was a huge gamer. Spyro the Dragon, Crash Bandicoot and Pokemon were my go to games. However, I find that I’m more of a watcher now so I can literally spend hours watching my brother play Assassin’s Creed.

I’m a bit TV watcher and recently I’ve taking to watching a lot more films. I think my brother’s new projector is the main reason for this. I always find that if I’m not in the mood to read I usually turn to my TV shows or browse social media to fill the void haha.

I hope you’re having fun on your road trip. 😀

  24. Combustible reviews

I get what you mean about balancing each out! I used to game when I was younger, but nowadays I prefer watching let’s plays rather than actually playing.

I have a lot of hobbies, crochet, learning the piano, but none, besides reading, that I’m fully invested in. I do like to write, but also find it frustrating because, quite often (and probably like most writers), I think the plot sucks and my writing as well. :’D

[…] Other Hobbies Besides Reading? I discussed what other hobbies I have besides reading (e.g. video gaming), and I invite others to share their hobbies. It’s so much fun hearing all of the hobbies that other book bloggers and avid readers have! If you haven’t already commented on this Thursday Thoughts post, I’d love to hear what other hobbies you have. […]

(Second time’s a charm! I will copy and paste this reply before I press send, just in case!)

EEE YAY, a fellow gamer. Though, I’m a little hesitant to call myself a gamer nowadays because I haven’t saw down and played a game in a long time. I think the last game I played and finished was Fallout 4? I’m waiting on a few games though (Horizon: Zero Dawn, Dishonoured 2, Pokemon Sun and Moon), but until then, I think my gaming hobby is on hold — which is fine by me, because I’ve been doing more reading and blogging. 😀

For me, balancing is about making time as opposed to finding time. One of my other hobbies aside from gaming is fitness, which I try and dedicate 90 minutes to at least 5 days a week! And I think I try hard to dedicate that time because fitness has been very, very positive for my mental health and wellbeing, so it’s become a necessity in my life that I enjoy. c:
